On January 30, 2020, the WHO announced the infection to be an Emergency in Public Health of International Concern.

Globally, as of February 14, 2020, 1,381 deaths and 49,053 laboratory-confirmed cases had been reported. Because of the perceived risk of sickness, many governments have developed a plethora of control measures.
