Abstract

Unemployment remains a persistent and complex socio-economic issue that affects millions worldwide. Its negative consequences extend beyond financial difficulties, with significant psychological effects, particularly the onset of depression. This article explores the intricate relationship between unemployment and depression, considering both direct and indirect causes. By examining the biological, psychological, and social mechanisms, we aim to highlight how unemployment can act as a major stressor, leading to depressive symptoms. Additionally, we will review empirical evidence, including longitudinal studies, to evaluate the causality and implications of this relationship. Lastly, potential interventions and policy recommendations will be discussed.
