Abstract

Anne Tyler’s A Slipping-Down Life is a poignant exploration of identity, self-worth, and human connection, centering on the life of Evie Decker, a lonely and introspective teenager. Fascinated by the local musician Drumstrings Casey, Evie embarks on a journey of self-discovery that challenges both her sense of belonging and her understanding of relationships. This paper examines the thematic richness of the novel, highlighting Tyler’s treatment of personal growth, social alienation, and the transformative power of human connections. Evie’s characterization serves as a mirror of adolescent isolation and the quest for recognition. Her impulsive act of carving Casey’s name into her forehead symbolizes a desperate search for identity and visibility, setting into motion a series of events that reshape both her life and Casey’s. Through their evolving relationship, Tyler portrays the complexity of emotional attachment, vulnerability, and the process of confronting personal insecurities.
